Partitioning for Linux by Robert Heller
2008/02/28 Robert Heller Deepwoods Software Abstract This article discusses some of the things to consider when planning the partitioning of a Linux system. These considerations include thoughts on how different directories will be used and how the usage of different directories might suggest how to partition your disk space. Also my thoughts on the relationship between backup strategies and partitioning are covered. Dual Boot Vista by Brian Mutero
2008/02/27 Brian Mutero Can I dual-boot SCO OpenServer and Windows VISTA? I'm used the the good old "type dos" at the boot prompt, but that has let me down. Any ideas? Images or words? by Anthony Lawrence
2008/02/26 I probably should have some photo or image here - all the best blogging advice sites will tell you that pictures are important: people like pictures, people remember pictures, pictures add to content. 3-D Modeling by Anthony Lawrence
2008/02/25 My father sometimes made models for projects he was trying to sell. These would be plaster on wire frame or sometimes cut and carved from wood and plastic. I remember one in particular: it was for a garbage cooking plant to feed pigs.. I don't recall why, but the main topological feature was a hill with a road leading up to it. I don't know if my father successfully sold that project, but that model became part of the landscape of my toys and many a toy cowboy or soldier battled enemies from that hilltop. Measure by Anthony Lawrence
2008/02/24 I play poker once a week. It's just dime ante, with a limit of 3 raises, so the largest possible bet is eighty cents and even a round of 7-Card Stud is unlikely to involve more than a few dollars from each player. I usually do pretty well, but of course have bad nights now and then. Sometimes that's because I'm playing stupidly due to being over tired, sometimes it's just having an unlucky night of very good but second-best hands. I know how much money I bring to each game and I count it the next morning so I know how much I won or lost.. I just like to keep track. mod_perl on Debian by Anthony Lawrence
2008/02/23 I've mentioned before that I'm thinking of bringing my webhosting in-house. As part of that, I installed Debian in a virtual machine here and started configuring it to be a web server. Ball Computers by Anthony Lawrence
2008/02/22 I happened to be at Logan airport last week and while waiting for a flight to arrive I noticed the large "ball" structure/machine by George Rhoades. It looks very similar to these pictures but is titled "Kinetic Frugality". It's a structure of various sized balls that roll through tracks and strike chimes and bells as they roll along. Electric motors lift the balls back up to their starting points when they finish and the whole process restarts. Oddly I don't find that at George Rhoades own web page. Finding your iSight Account Photo by Anthony Lawrence
2008/02/21 When you first get a MacBook (or I assume any Mac with a built in iSight), you get prompted to snap a photo of yourself to use with your account. If you've never used the iSight camera before you'll probably end up with a pretty bad picture - here's mine: Full Text RSS Feed now available - Coming Soon - Skills Tests - Surveys - Kerio Mail Server - Fortinet Routers - Consulting - Advertise Here
Last Words by Anthony Lawrence
2008/02/20 I wonder how many bloggers have thought about posting something after their death. There was a recent case of Andrew Olmsted, a soldier who arranged for just that. He left a touching post, so if you don't want to get all teared up now, you may want to put off clicking on that link. Here I'm going to talk about more mundane matters: how you'd arrange for such a post to occur. SCO's still kicking? by Anthony Lawrence
2008/02/19 I see that most Linux folks are very surprised by the announcement that Stephen Norris Capital Partners plans to pump money into the dying patient in the hope of resuscitation. Actually, I'm not surprised: SCO's assets do have value and if handled correctly they still could have a place at the table. The Year of Linux by Anthony Lawrence
2008/02/16 We've heard it year after year: *this* is the year when Linux pulls ahead and becomes a real force.. Well, maybe. Certainly low priced Linux boxes have been snapped up quickly whenever they have been offered, and it's certainly true that the general public grumbles more about Microsoft than they used to. I think it's even common wisdom now to avoid Vista when buying a new computer, but so far that's translated more to "ask for XP" rather than trying anything else. The "R" Word by Anthony Lawrence
2008/02/15 Uh-oh. That awful "R" word is getting thrown around. Officially, our fearless leaders are still saying "No way, everything's fine.. the tax rebates will fix everything", but I'm sure that behind closed doors there is a lot more worry and fear. Major Site Crash by Anthony Lawrence
2008/02/11 We had a major site crash at 9:15 this morning and were down most of the day. Self Hosting in the FIOS Era by Anthony Lawrence
2008/02/08 I'm seriously thinking about bringing my web hosting in-house. The reason is that Verizon FIOS makes this not only possible, but very attractive: I can get a static IP with 20/20MB service for less than $150.00 a month. That's dirt cheap, and 20MBs is far more outbound bandwidth than I need; I might even be able to get away with 20/5 at $99.00 per month. Windows philosophy is so different from Unix by Anthony Lawrence
2008/02/06 I happened to notice this silly tip about Speed Up Disk Access by Disabling Last Access Updating in Windows XP. I left a comment noting that last access is actually a useful forensic tool in troubleshooting (see Unix and Linux Troubleshooting Tips for more on that) and I also really doubt that this "speed up" is even noticeable except perhaps when copying thousands of files. What to do about IE6? by Anthony Lawrence
2008/02/02 In the last month, this website had over 35,000 visits from IE6 browsers. IE7 wasn't far behind with a little over 33,000, and both get trounced by Firefox (over 85,000 visits for all versions) but too many people are still using IE6. Selling the Mac by Anthony Lawrence
2008/01/27 I have been keeping my resolve about recommending Macs. When people would ask what they should buy for home use, I used to hedge my bets and suggest that they "might" consider a Mac, but now I'm much more aggressive and will say something like "Unless you absolutely need some Microsoft only application, you should buy a Mac". A practical guide to Ubuntu Linux by Anthony Lawrence
2008/01/29 The arrival of Mark G. Sobell's "A practical guide to Ubuntu Linux" a few days ago prompted me to try living in Ubuntu for a day. I'm a Mac guy (or have been since OS X anyway), but that's because of Unix more than anything else, so I could just as easily use Linux as my daily OS. Geeks and Sports by Anthony Lawrence
2008/01/23 A healthy percentage of techie types are uninterested in Sports - that's sports with the big "S", as in professional Baseball, Basketball, Soccer, Hockey and Football. A few will express some interest in the Olympics, especially for the individual events where a team isn't involved. Some may even like to play sports, getting together now and then for a game of hoops or softball or whatever. But the rabid fascination with the Super Bowl, the Series and all that is usually missing from technical people. Getting excited about "your" team when in fact it is nothing but a corporation hiring and firing like every other corporation makes no sense. Why not root for IBM's earnings against Microsoft's, and earnestly discuss Apple's likely earnings this quarter if Steve Jobs gets a cold?
